If you've seen an American film about driving, you will soon realize that a manual car is rather new. There are a lot of new things emerging in the car industry. The Fast and Furious series shows the satisfaction of using cars, be it manual or automatic. In the movie, the drivers across the pool prefer to drive automatic cars, but we Brits like gear sticks. So, is there an advantage of driving an automatic car?
What is the difference between manual and automatic transmission?
Technically speaking, the main difference is that automatic cars don't have clutch pedals. It also has a simplified gearbox. Manual transmission cars have five or six gears, plus reverse, giving you full control over the car's performance.
Automatic cars have four modes:
- Park - P
- Reversed - R
- Neutral - N
- Drive - D
The car itself chooses the right gear for speed and road conditions. This means you only need to think about whether you are going forward, backward, or stopping.
There are several alternative types of automatic transmission, including a Continuously Variable Transaxle (CVT) gearbox, single automatic clutch and twin clutch. For the purpose of comparing these three, we are emphasizing on their traditional automatic gearboxes.
Are manual cars better than automatic cars?
Everything is not simple. Naturally, whatever choice you make, it carries advantages and disadvantages. Your choice will mostly depend on your driving style and other circumstances.
The main advantage of driving a manual car is that you have more control over the car itself. If you want to switch from second gear to fourth gear, you can do it easily.
You might notice that manual cars are cheaper than automatic ones. This is largely due to the fact that automation is not that popular yet, so, there is not much demand for them. Several drivers stated that it feels 'right' to change gears yourself. Some habits are difficult to break, and there is a certain level of satisfaction that can be obtained when changing gears.
